I wonder what your name could be...I actually kinda think that unisex names are cute. That is, when a girl's name sounds like a guy's, not the other way round.

Alpha is not unisex, its a male name. Haven't you heard of terms like "the alpha male". Ever heard of an "alpha female"? I used to think alpha is female, since the convention is ladies first, and alpha is the first letter of the alphabet. However, I had a prof. in undergrad called alpha (he taught applied thermodynamics, ... maybe I should say tried to teach, sorry... I digress). So I guess you are right... should not be a problem living as you are in Chicago.

Dear Alpha I know what it feels not to have a unisex name. But each person has his/her own opinion. When asked"How should a child be named?" the following were the names I garnered,

Aristotle:According to the Namus theorem, the name of a person is equal to the square of the parent's mood and the time of date of birth.

Einstein:When a baby is born the probability of naming the child as a male or a female is directly proportional to the parent's mood and inversely proportional to other people's suggestions. It is independent of the baby's gender.

Newton:The child should be thrown to the skies.Depending on the velocity with which he reaches the ground he should be named. If the baby dies the baby should be named 0MS-2(zero accl.)

Vajpayee:If the child is a male he should be named Father India and if it is a girl, she should be named Mother India.Their children should be named Son India and Daughter India respectively.(Clapping by audience)

Laloo Prasad Yadav:All Indians are my brothers and sisters and the one ones that I marry are my wives.(this is the only thing that he knows in Inglipish)

Bill Clinton:Whose children?(good question)

Osama bin Laden:By God's Grace, all should be named Terrorist no:1.Terrorist no:2,Terrorist no:3 etc.(attaterrorist osama!)

Sachin Tendulkar:A child should be named based on the number of times he or she smiles per hour.(why try to advertise even here ,the fool)

J.K.Rowling:He or she should be named according to their own destinies because a person is judged only by the decisions he makes in times of troubles and problems. Moreover Voldemort's back;so all of them should stop giving names and children should collectively be called Bumblebee's Army.(completely wacko)

Salman Khan:That depends on the type of mother that the baby is born to.But my son will be called 'Salmani Khan a.k.a. Muscles' and daughter 'Salmania Khan a.k.a. Muscly'(more souds like maccher and machili)

Luna Lovegood:I am not going to marry so it doesn't actually matter.I don't mind my name being called Luna or TVS or HONDA or whatever.

For the record, I do know how to spell FEMININE .... I dont know who ate all my N's in the previous comment...

December 2, 2003   08:51 AM PST

also, by the same token, names ending in der eg: Parminder, Gaginder, Jasminder are masculine to me ... but they are feminie names in India .... so really ... there is no such thing as femine and masculine names ... they're all uni-sex .... this also gives me an excuse to name my baby girl James.

As a matter of technical speaking, my name is feminine only in Asia I believe ... rest of the world its uni-sex ... I have worked with a guy with the same name as me and it was always confusing which of us someone wanted....

But then I noticed alot of names that we think are horribly feminine are uni-sex here, eg: Tracy, Dana, Jamie .. etc.

Pleo: Yeah Jaideep..its not even unisex according to me. The other problem with your name? lemme guess, its a very common Sindhi name.

Star: Yeah, my dad had a bunch of exotic dancer names..hmm..food for thot. oh well, male version of ur name eh? hehe. but still your name is an established girl name..

Krithika: Guessing games will have to wait till I come and meet you. But for now the biggest clue I can give is- Its a greek alphabet and starts with A.

Patrix: oye patrix, thank u yaar! U got into my good books again.
you call this fun? aargh! It was brutal man..identity crisis, being mistaken for a guy is not fun.

Ricer: So its Prerna kya? Its cool. At least very girly.

Madhu: I hope you wont beat me up. I was willing to bet on my life that you were a girl. I even was thinking, wow, this woman smokes and all. yeah, whats with a girl's name man? hehe! The best part was when this guy called Madhu made fun of my name that too on air (radio)..grr. Thats a whole different story.

Heretic: Thank God you explain yourself. I was thinking you married Osama. Yeah, hope their kids are named approp.

Venkat: That friend was a guy I hope. Yeah, mine is better thanks.

Rebecca: You have a nice name. It should be fairly easy to pronounce.

Amit: Man, how you hit the nail on the right head! My name is Hari Pattar..green stone..named after my green heart.

Gosh, imagine being married to a 6-ft long-haired bushy-bearded Osama look-alike called Kiran [Ok, so his full name sounds more masculine with a Singh thrown in there for effect].

:D A very close friend of mine is married to him; and her name is Navjoth. Scary parents and scarier couple! Wonder about their kids...
